Who Can Do Yoga? (Hint: Everyone)

Updated: May 12

"I’m not flexible enough for yoga.”

It’s one of the most common things people say when they talk about yoga—and one of the biggest myths in the yoga world.

The idea that yoga is only for the flexible, young, or physically fit often comes from social media, advertising, or fitness culture. But the truth is: yoga is not about flexibility. It’s not about twisting into perfect shapes or touching your toes. Yoga is about creating space—physically, mentally, and emotionally—exactly where you are right now.

As a teacher who has worked with all kinds of people—beginners, older adults, those recovering from injury, or navigating life changes—I truly believe that everybody can do yoga. Young or old, stiff or flexible, beginner or experienced—it doesn’t matter. What matters most is your willingness to show up and explore—not just the physical postures, but all dimensions of the practice.

Yoga Meets You Where You Are

Yoga is not a performance. It’s a practice of presence, awareness, and connection—between your body, breath, and mind. Flexibility may come with time, but it is never a requirement to begin.

In fact, some of the most meaningful progress in yoga happens when you learn to listen to your body, respect its limits, and move from a place of inner intelligence—not outer appearance.

Every yoga pose offers benefits, no matter how “complete” it looks. It doesn’t matter if you don’t reach the final shape or hold it for long. What truly matters is the intention, the awareness, and the connection you create with your body—even if just for a moment. That connection is deeply valuable.

Yoga is not about touching your toes. It’s about what you learn on the way down.

Props Make Yoga Accessible

In Iyengar Yoga, we use props like blocks, straps, blankets, and bolsters—not to make the poses easier, but to make them more effective and accessible.

Props help your body align in a safe, stable, and anatomically correct way, so you can truly experience the benefits of each pose. They allow you to stay longer, breathe deeper, and explore with confidence—regardless of your flexibility or experience.

With the support of props, yoga becomes something everyone can do. And more than that—it becomes something everyone can grow through.

Yoga Is for You

What if your body is already ready for yoga—just as it is?

Yoga isn’t about changing yourself. It’s about coming home to yourself.

It’s not about touching your toes—it’s about what you learn on the way down.

You don’t need to be flexible.

You don’t need to look a certain way.

You don’t need to be anything other than exactly who you are today.

If you have a body, you can do yoga.

And at Yaha Yoga, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

““I always thought yoga wasn’t for me because I’m not flexible. But by beginning Iyengar yoga, I learned that it’s not about how far you stretch—it’s about how deeply you connect. The use of props made every pose feel safe and doable. I finally feel like yoga is for me.”

Leila, 42

“After an injury, I was nervous to move my body again. But with gentle support and clear guidance, I found strength and confidence I didn’t know I had. Every session reminds me to meet myself where I am, and that’s such a gift.”

Jonas, 56
